Biography

oshua is a Master of Environment student specialising in climate change at The University of Melbourne. He has a background in meteorology and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (climate and weather major) from The University of Melbourne in 2018. His research focuses on the ACCESS-S1 climate model and its ability to predict severe fire weather on seasonal timescales.

THESIS: Performance of the ACCESS-S1 climate model in daily-scale severe fire weather prediction

Joshua's project will focus on the Bureau of Meteorology’s ACCESS-S1 climate model and its ability to predict severe fire weather on seasonal timescales. ACCESS-S1 is used to build the Bureau of Meteorology’s seasonal forecasts and provides probabilistic information about whether variables like temperature, rainfall, and streamflows are likely to exceed or fall below long-term averages for an upcoming season. The model has not yet been comprehensively tested for its ability to provide similar information about severe fire weather. Joshua's project will further explore the capabilities of the ACCESS-S1 model and increase our understanding of extreme weather processes and their prediction on seasonal timescales.
