Are you a climate scientist attending the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) Annual Meeting? Are you interested in highlighting climate science in secondary school and university lessons? If so, this workshop, is for you.

Workshop aims

TROP ICSU (“Trans-disciplinary Research Oriented Pedagogy for Improving Climate Studies and Understanding”) is a global project funded by the International Council of Science. It aims to improve understanding of climate science by providing educators with teaching tools and lesson plans. TROP ICSU collates and curates a collection of these teaching resources so that teachers in schools and colleges/universities across the world can use them to introduce examples and case studies from climate science and climate change to the teaching of Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences and other disciplines. The goal is not to introduce Climate Education as a stand-alone topic, but to integrate it with the existing curriculum.

This expert workshop aims to contribute to the TROP ICSU repository of teaching tools and lesson plans for use in secondary schools across the world.  A specific focus is lesson plans that are useful for teaching Australian curriculums for Years 7-12 STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). The workshop will give teachers, climate scientists and curriculum experts the opportunity to work together in small groups to develop these lesson plans and gain from each other’s expertise and experience.

Who should attend?

Climate scientists: We encourage climate scientists with experience of undergraduate teaching (including demonstrating), providing training and/or school outreach to attend.

Teachers: We encourage secondary school teachers teaching Years 7-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects with an interest in using climate science examples to teach the curriculum to attend.

Curriculum experts: We encourage representatives of curriculum authorities and other organisations with knowledge of Years 7-12 STEM curriculums to attend.

Logistics

Some light pre-workshop preparation is required to motivate ideas for potential lesson plan topics and resources prior to the workshop. This will also give attendees a chance to browse the TROP ICSU repository for resources, which may be useful to them for their own teaching.

Registering for the workshop

You can register for the workshop as part of the process for registering for the AMOS Annual Meeting. Places are limited, so we encourage those wishing to attend to register by the AMOS early bird registration deadline (30/11/2019). There is no additional fee for attending the workshop.
