Australian researchers in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes have made major contributions to the 2021 IPCC Working Group 1 report, through the authorship of the report, review and the many scientific papers cited in the report.

CLEX researchers have developed a new global land-based daily precipitation dataset called Rainfall Estimates on a Gridded Network - REGEN - aimed at facilitating studies to understand changes and variability in several aspects of daily precipitation distributions, extremes and measures of hydrological intensity.
This project will assess how precipitation projections for Australia from global and regional models scale using the latest start-of-the-art regional and global climate models.
New research suggests that increasing spatial resolution alone is not sufficient to obtain a systematic improvement in the simulation of precipitation extremes, and other improvements (e.g. physics, tuning) may be required.
The Extreme Rainfall team took on some key observational challenges for precipitation research and then used some of this data to test our models. There was also a raft of individual achievements to add a little light in this difficult time.

Focusing on the land regions around the world, the researchers assessed the representation of annual maximum of daily precipitation (Rx1day) across 22 observational products gridded at 1°x1° resolution.
This study looks at data-sharing issues and outlines the history of the rationale and use of indices, the types of indices that are frequently used and the advantages and pitfalls in analysing them.
