Every day, insurance and reinsurance companies and capital markets make decisions on risk and how to allocate capital against the possibility of catastrophic losses. Far from being an abstract process, this is crucial in ensuring that companies are able to meet their liabilities to individuals, companies and governments that rely on financial support and indemnification to rebuild after disasters and embed resilience.

In this presentation, Dr Ryan Springall will articulate how the global financial system uses detailed catastrophe loss and climate models to price risk and allocate capital. Further, he will show how critical it is to have a robust and independent scientific community that is objective in the assessment of climate risks and how the work being done by researchers is having a real-time impact on the financial industry.
