One year after finishing her PhD at the Australian National University and starting a job with the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Jen Wurtzel shares her insights on making the transition from academia to government. This talk will be given in two parts. First, she will talk about the PhD experience and transferable skills, and how these helped her get her current position. The second part of the talk will focus on her current job at NSW DPI. She will discuss the technical work that she has been doing on the DPI Climate Branch’s Enhanced Drought Information System, and the challenges of communicating drought and providing drought data to often distraught producers and regional government bodies during a drought.
