RP2 Heatwaves and cold air outbreaks report – August 2019

August 1, 2019 8:00 am Published by Comments Off on RP2 Heatwaves and cold air outbreaks report – August 2019

Extreme weather conditions and a changing climate are often recognised by their immediate effects. But as research coming out of the Heatwaves and Cold Air Outbreaks program has shown over the past four months, these events are often generated by distant influences and when they occur have further impact beyond their immediate vicinity.

UNSW08: The effect of the Millennium drought on land

July 19, 2019 8:00 am Published by Comments Off on UNSW08: The effect of the Millennium drought on land

In this project, the student will learn more about the effects of the Millennium drought on the surface energy budget, particularly on the ratio of sensible heat flux to latent heat flux (i.e. SH/LH).

UNSW05: Drought termination and extreme precipitation in Australia

July 19, 2019 5:00 am Published by Comments Off on UNSW05: Drought termination and extreme precipitation in Australia

This student project will determine the probability of a drought being terminated by an extreme precipitation event to assess the risk of drought-induced flooding. For this the student will assess observations, reanalysis data and results from a large climate model ensemble.

Mon02: Evaluate how the the IPO modulates precipitation extremes and drought risk across tropical continents

July 18, 2019 3:00 am Published by Comments Off on Mon02: Evaluate how the the IPO modulates precipitation extremes and drought risk across tropical continents

In this project, we will investigate the links between precipitation extremes and the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), including its signature in El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impacts, across tropical land regions.

Postdoc, Research Associate: Droughts and eucalyptus trees

July 11, 2019 2:32 pm Published by Comments Off on Postdoc, Research Associate: Droughts and eucalyptus trees

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work on a new ARC-funded project exploring how vulnerable Australia’s eucalypts are to future droughts. This project will combine data-synthesis, experimental manipulation and modelling to deliver new process-orientated insight into the response of eucalyptus trees to projected changes in the frequency, magnitude and duration of future droughts across Australia.

UniMelb01: Australia’s Centennial Drought

May 3, 2019 1:00 am Published by Comments Off on UniMelb01: Australia’s Centennial Drought

This project aims to learn more about the 1888 Centennial Drought using palaeoclimate information, documentary records, station based data and gridded datasets.

RP3 Drought report – April 2019

March 21, 2019 2:30 pm Published by Comments Off on RP3 Drought report – April 2019

New students, an OA for Andy Pitman and some key work on evaporation, the impacts of mesophyll conductance on plant growth, a new algorithm for photosynthesis and future projections of drought made for a strong start to 2019.

Workshop: The science of multi-year drought in Australia

March 18, 2019 9:27 am Published by Comments Off on Workshop: The science of multi-year drought in Australia

A successful workshop on the science of multi-year drought was recently held at Monash University in Melbourne, where 50 experts from Australia, and small number of experts from the UK and the US, met to discuss what we know about the science of these droughts in Australia.
