It has long been suggested in the literature, and discussed casually by meteorologists, that rainfall in Melbourne often occurs as lines of precipitation. However, this had yet to be quantified. CLEX researchers analysed 15 years of radar data from the Australian Radar Archive, using an objective method to identify and track these ‘linear systems’ based on radar reflectivity, size, and shape characteristics.

This project will explore the characteristics of the linear systems -- size, orientation, propagation - that lead to the most extreme rainfall events.
This project will assess how precipitation projections for Australia from global and regional models scale using the latest start-of-the-art regional and global climate models.
Under future global warming, models shows increases in the wettest day of the season or year exceeds the range of changes explained by natural variability in most land areas.
