CLEX researchers explore the challenges of identifying atmospheric rivers and find that detecting these events is highly variable according to resolution, and choice of the integrated water vapour transport thresholds. The uncertainties in a single detection method and data parameters may be as large as uncertainties across AR detection methodologies.

In this paper, CLEX researchers developed new metrics to assess whether forecaster edits targeting these processes were reducing error in the daily varying component of the wind forecasts, by comparing edited and unedited forecast data with weather station observations.

As the end of his masters degree approaches, Ewan Short is at a career crossroads. He studied meteorology, and his main choice is whether to pursue a career as an operational forecaster with the Bureau of Meteorology, or do a PhD. An internship with the Bureau of Meteorology was a step on the way to making that decision.
