Holger Wolff (CLEX CMS) covers some basic Bash topics
Dr Mandy Freund and CLEX colleagues have produced a world first 400-year long record of El Niño activity. It's a record that was previously considered impossible to extract from coral cores.
CLEX researchers and colleagues from Australia, Germany and the US have quantified the effect of climate extremes, such as droughts or heatwaves, on the yield variability of staple crops around the world. Overall, year-to-year changes in climate factors during the growing season of maize, rice, soy and spring wheat accounted for 20%-49% of yield fluctuations, according to research published in Environmental Research Letters.
Prof Christian Jakob (Monash University). Climate models have significant errors in precipitation globally, but in particular in the tropics. Most models overestimate annual mean tropical precipitation, with the largest errors occurring over the warm tropical oceans of the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Atlantic. In addition to the mean errors, there are significant shortcomings in the rainfall variability in space and time. Given its immediate impact on tropical rainfall, most of the errors are usually attributed to shortcomings in the... View Article
This project will apply state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of microscale urban flow such as large eddy simulations to develop a 1-D (multi-layer) model of turbulent flow with detailed parameterisation regarding the role of geometry; surface heating and material; and vegetation.
This induction is for new CLEX students and postdocs. If you have joined the Centre since the last induction (September 2018) you should join this meeting. If you joined prior to September 2018 and missed that induction, please join this one. The objective of the meeting is to introduce you all to the Centre, and the support and opportunities available via our Researcher Development program. Videoconference rooms have been booked at each node, please talk to your friendly admin guru... View Article
Marine heatwaves are becoming longer and more frequent. A global assessment of marine heatwaves has concluded that they have “the capacity to restructure entire ecosystems and disrupt the provision of ecological goods and services in the coming decades".
CLEX researchers evaluate the performance of CORDEX simulations over Australia against gridded observations of temperature and precipitation.
How wet the soil is before a storm can determine the amount of rain that falls. This research also produced some interesting findings for rainfall in Australia.
