Research brief: Climate model projections of Philippines typhoon activity

August 22, 2019 12:56 pm Published by Comments Off on Research brief: Climate model projections of Philippines typhoon activity

The Philippines is one of the most exposed countries in the world to tropical cyclones. In order to provide information to help the country build resilience and plan for a future under a warmer climate, researchers built on previous research to investigate implications of future climate change on tropical cyclone activity in the Philippines.

This was PhD student Charuni Pathmeswaran's first CLEX Winter School. It was an intense and challenging week, but it also gave her an opportunity to explore Melbourne. By week's end Charuni was motivated and had added a range of new skills she will apply to her research.

As this newsletter goes to press, Bureau of Meteorology rainfall records show most of NSW and substantial parts of south-west Queensland remain in drought. Beyond the immediate agricultural, hydrologic and ecologic impacts, many small rural towns are starting to run out of water.

Extreme weather conditions and a changing climate are often recognised by their immediate effects. But as research coming out of the Heatwaves and Cold Air Outbreaks program has shown over the past four months, these events are often generated by distant influences and when they occur have further impact beyond their immediate vicinity.

The past four months have produced a sequence of impressive papers that should significantly improve the modelling of precipitation and our capacity to better understand how it may change in the future.

UNSW12: How well can we reconstruct past ocean circulation?

There is compelling evidence that under different climate states (e.g. glacial-interglacial cycles), the Atlantic Ocean has experienced significant water mass reorganisations and circulation changes. This project aims to better constrain these variations, using models able to simulate proxy variations.
